Overview
MangaDex DMCA Controversy refers to an incident in which the manga distribution website MangaDex had a considerable part of its catalog removed after a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown was reported on Twitter / X in mid-May 2025. According to a forum post on the site, the joint DMCA was presumably sent on behalf of major publishers, both Japanese and South Korean. Online, the news gained viral attention among manga readers, who claimed several unlicensed materials were only available on the site, while also sharing memes and debating about the catalog takedown.
Background
On May 14th, 2025, users from the MangaDex[1] manga website reported that a series of chapters from multiple series had disappeared from the platform.
The staff member T10_ replied to a comment by zymosan99 about the topic that day, claiming a DMCA request was sent to take down the chapters and that this is the first time it "happened on this scale."

On May 16th, 2025, according to The Express Tribune,[2] MangaDex removed more than 700 manga series, both licensed and unlicensed titles. The notices were reportedly issued by "several companies, including Kakao, Naver, Square Enix, Kodansha and Houbunsha." Game Rant[3] also reported that Comeso, an anti-piracy service, is acting on behalf of several of the companies mentioned previously.
Online Reactions
Shortly after MangaDex users noticed the missing manga chapters from the site, the topic went viral in the community on Reddit, Facebook and Twitter / X in mid-May 2025.
For example, on May 15th, 2025, Facebook[4] user Akira Kei uploaded a Reddit post and a screenshot from MangaDex's forum about the DMCA, writing that "a lot of other series from different publishers" were also removed. The post (seen below) received roughly 340 likes and 270 shares in a day.

On the same day, Redditor u/Roy_Atticus_Lee uploaded a meme to the /r/okbuddybaka[5] subreddit related to MangaDex's DMCA controversy, which amassed over 3,200 upvotes and 190 comments in a day (seen below).
